What are Digital Transformations?

What are Digital Transformations?

We are innovating new business models.

The word transformation implies more than just process change or a shift from one tool to another. It represents a complete metamorphosis across whole industries, companies, departments, or people. A business unit has been transformed when it reaches a state of transition so great that it no longer resembles its former self. Agile infrastructure enables new possibilities that were only dreams in previous business eras.

Digital transformations accomplish the most dramatic change in status for businesses. With digital technology driving the business, you can move faster, serve customers in new ways, and create new opportunities for growth and innovation. We have moved well beyond automating tasks when considering what digital infrastructure can accomplish. Today, we are innovating entirely new business models.

Trade-offs

If you are a retailer, WiFi is just part of your offering to customers in the store. They expect it. WiFi is also a way for you to signal customers to enter the store, understand what they are shopping for and show them your entire line. If you own a medical practice, electronic medical records (EMR) are now part of patient diagnosis and the foundation for coordinating care across the practice. If you are a media company, the number of screens on which you can display your content is seemingly endless.

Tradeoffs still exist, though. In today’s organizations, back-end infrastructure and customer-facing services compete for the same limited investment funds. New ideas for services or expansion plans can be shelved because of the cost of the related infrastructure.

Digital Transformations, therefore, are also about what you choose to focus limited capital and resources on, and what you choose to outsource. By outsourcing some or all of your infrastructure needs, you free up resources to focus on creating innovative new kinds of value for your customers and drive efficiencies for all stakeholders.

"Digital business is growing. 50% of businesses intend to be a digital business in twenty-four months, and 83% in three to five years, which will result in high stresses on individuals in organizations. By 2020, 75% of businesses will become or prepare to become a digital business.”1
